Dropbox Vs. Google Docs

Ok... so ... as an avid Google Docs user.. I was very excited to find out that there was a folder system that could be accessed offline from any mobile device/computer as long as you pass through a wifi zone at some point before you need it.  But I discovered one downfall....

After working on a paper all day at work, I FORGOT to save the new version in Dropbox.  When I got home and opened it expecting to pick up where I had left off, I found the old version.  *Slaps forehead*  How frustrating!!!

So I have decided, that while Dropbox is GREAT when you want share files with people or send some them somewhere else rather than using an actual flash drive.  It's not so great for documents you are currently working on.  You can't actually edit the files that are IN Dropbox.  At least not from your iPad.  So you have to remember to replace the old version with the new edited copy.

Google docs allows me to edit my papers directly without remembering to send them to myself, which is exactly what I need in a cloud file system.   It also saves instantaneously, whereas Dropbox appears to have a delay when syncing with my devices.  If it doesn't sync before I'm out of wifi range again I'm out of luck!  Of course, Google docs ONLY works when you have internet... but when I'm working from work, the library, or any cafe/diner,  then going home, it is the best choice because I KNOW the files will be there.

So, my final recommendation..

USE Dropbox.. it's a great way to get your documents offline.  But make sure you back yourself up some other way just in case the sync is a little funky.

Google Docs is a dream (as long as you have internet access of course)... You will find more info on Google Docs capabilities in my next post.
